About Kath

Kath Dolan is the writer behind Why Thank You, I Made it Myself, an interview series about the practicalities of running a creative businessWriters-for-hire starve if they’re one-trick ponies.

I write about creative folk across the arts, science, education, technology and business: in-house at ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, in  my interview series Why Thank You, I Made it Myself, for media clients like Green, UPPERCASE and the Australian Education Union News, and copywriting clients like Monash University, Hoyne and Illustrators Australia.

I draw and paint and sell my art. And I curate and market a quirky art collection by some of my favourite Australian artists for On Stone gallery/store in South Melbourne and Singapore.

I learned my trade as a writer and editor working in-house at Lonely Planet, Niche Publishing and Southdown Press. As a journalism graduate I somehow landed a job as launch writer on a media and marketing magazine for a terrifyingly well informed industry audience. Everything that came afterwards felt easier. I edited an adventure magazine for kids, managed production of a custom magazine, and headed a global team writing newsletters and digital content to share travel tips between readers, authors and editors.

Jumping the fence to freelance I found my calling. (All the fun bits minus endless boring meetings and office politics. Plus you can wear tracky dacks and hang out with your dog.) I spent a decade writing for The Age and its stablemates on food, education, theatre, music, real estate, travel, art and whatever else they threw at me.

I’ve written features, profiles and columns for magazines, newspapers and websites like Habitus, InDesign, Peppermint, Treadlie, Jetstar and Artshub. I’ve created interview series, online news, opinion pieces and reports for Monash University, event wrap-ups for Craft Victoria, case studies for Sustainability Victoria, blog stories for Illustrators Australia, books for Tarrawarra Estate and Spotlight, marketing collateral for Greta Donaldson Publicity and FireWorks PR, award submissions for Hoyne and Crown Hotels, and fundraising campaign copy for Bush Heritage Australia, the Monash Institute of Medical Engineering and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre.

As a journo and copywriter I’ve learned to quickly dig deep to understand clients’ needs. Find useful calls to action and stories of substance. Write persuasively with depth, warmth and detail.

I’m as happy whipping existing communications into shape as creating fresh copy from scratch:

  • Features, profiles and bios
  • Interviews
  • Websites, newsletters, blogs and brochures
  • Columns
  • Case studies
  • Books
  • Event wrap-ups
  • Reports and submissions

Multiple stakeholders are the norm. I interview whoever’s needed and collaborate with whoever’s required to tell the right story in all the right ways: clients, photographers, videographers, designers, branding experts…

I’m chuffed that I retain so many clients for years. They tell me I’m reliable and easy to work with. (Sub-editors just like my clean copy. Which suits a word nerd just fine.)

Sound handy for your next project? Let’s talk.

“Kath Dolan is smart, thorough, proactive and eloquent.”

Jacquie Byron, Managing Editor The Place Economy, Hoyne

“Kath Dolan is a gifted writer who can turn her hand to a wide variety of subjects. Kath is a true professional; she conducts thorough research; takes the time to drill down to eke out the most compelling stories for interviews; understands her audience; delivers consistently on time and writes to brief. She also goes above and beyond to liaise with photographers and provide ‘options’ for angles and ideas for additional content. I would recommend Kath in a heartbeat; we are lucky to have her as a regular contributor to our magazine and have had great feedback from our members.”

Suzi Taylor, Co-editor Australian Education Union News

“Kath is a terrific writer. She has worked on several projects for me including copy for a brochure and profiles of academics. She has always submitted on time, and her work is very thoroughly researched, well crafted and edited. I highly recommend her.”

Chloe Smethurst, PR and Communications, Monash University

“Kath Dolan has been writing for Green magazine for eight years. In this time she has regularly delivered engaging and well researched articles on time, every time.”

“Kath was selected as a participant in the inaugural Craft Writers’ Program in 2016.  This competitive process aimed to uncover creative talent who brought new and diverse perspectives to the craft community and helped craft writing to reach new audiences. Kath came to the program bringing a strong journalistic background and a level of professionalism that made her an extremely valuable participant in the program.”

I’m proud as punch to be part of:

I have a BA in Journalism from RMIT and studied graphic design at Monash Uni. I’m always learning more – from Instagram photography tricks to screen printing techniques – through workshops, courses and private classes with talented, generous folk I admire.

Speaking of which, big thanks to the incomparable Tonia Composto of Lemon Chicken Por Favor for logos and branding and the unflappable Danielle Smelter for photography and website design. Ladies, you rock.
